Hyderabad: The life of veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy was a saga of relentless sacrifice and service. From his student days leading agitations, to his years in Parliament as the voice of the marginalized, to his final act of donating his body for medical education — every stage of his life was dedicated to the people. Now, his wife Dr. B. V. Vijayalakshmi has extended that legacy by donating their entire inherited wealth — 4.5 acres of land — for public and youth welfare activities.

A Lifetime of Struggle and Service

Born in 1942 in Mahbubnagar district, Sudhakar Reddy’s activism began at the young age of 15, when he led students demanding chalkboards and basic facilities in schools. That fiery spirit carried him into national prominence, first as President of the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) and later as President of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF), where he fought for employment opportunities, educational reforms, and lowering the voting age to 18. His fearless struggles landed him in jail many times — but he always stood firm, considering imprisonment a small price for public good.

The People’s Representative

Elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Nalgonda, Sudhakar Reddy became a rare voice for handloom weavers, farmers, unorganised workers, and fluoride-affected families of Telangana. His tenure as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour was marked by battles for social security and dignity for the invisible backbone of India’s workforce.

Simple Life, Great Ideals

Despite holding national-level positions, including as General Secretary of the CPI, Sudhakar Reddy lived simply and avoided personal luxuries. Fluent in more than eight languages, he could connect with people across cultures, but his strongest bond was always with the grassroots.

His sacrifices did not stop with his political life. At the end of his journey, he donated his eyes and body to Gandhi Medical College so medical students could learn from him even after death. This final act turned his departure into yet another contribution to society.

Wealth for the People

Now, his wife Dr. Vijayalakshmi has donated her entire inherited wealth — four-and-a-half acres of land — for people’s and youth’s needs. Announcing the decision, she said: “While alive, he worked for the people. After death, he gave his body for students. Now, the wealth we own will also go back to the people.”

A Legacy That Will Never Die

From the chalkboards he fought for as a schoolboy to the acres of land handed over to society today, the Suravaram family has shown that service is greater than possession. Their legacy is not measured in property or power but in lives touched and inspired.

Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy’s story is proof that politics can be about sacrifice, and that true immortality lies not in monuments, but in giving everything — even one’s body and wealth — back to the people.
